Since my Bachelor's degree, I have been involved in various areas. I worked as a porter for the Biological Sciences Campus and, above all, I was a Student Representative on the Degree Council. During this time, I was able to acquire skills in the area of communications and interpersonal relations. I became capable of listening to and interpreting the needs of other students and presenting them effectively to board members. After completing my bachelor's degree, I had experience as a door-to-door salesman for one of the leading companies in the Italian energy and gas market. In this context, I was in charge of a small sales team, on whose results I was accountable to the owner. This taught me to be quick-witted and proactive when approaching strangers, as well as the value of sacrifice as a means of achieving set goals within tight deadlines. During my Master's degree, I did volunteer work at the Casentino Forest National Park. The work I did was in support of the park's conservation activities, with a specific focus on amphibians and ungulates. This experience was very useful, and I realised the importance of teamwork and establishing good social relationships with other group members in order to achieve specific goals. After completing my Master's degree, I worked for about two years at the Venta Regional Park in Lithuania, supporting conservation and educational activities, particularly in schools. There was no shortage of opportunities to work as a tour guide for visitors, both Lithuanian and foreign. I also dedicated myself to the creation of a website in Italian for the institution, and to the design and coordination of the LatLit cross-border project ‘Visit Venta’, with which we promoted ecotourism in a coordinated manner with Lithuanian and Latvian authorities. I then started a PhD at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, which I am currently completing. During this project, I am working on ecological balances in freshwater ecosystems, as well as studying the population genetics of target species. This has given me the opportunity to develop my skills in the molecular laboratory, as well as biostatistics and bioinformatics. As part of my PhD, I carried out a research internship at the University of Warsaw, Poland. This project involved studying the gut microbiome of two species of freshwater fish. In Warsaw, I had the opportunity to supervise two undergraduate students. This taught me to be supportive of people at an earlier stage of their careers and to be more confident.

After graduating from high school, I enrolled in a three-year degree programme in ‘Biological Sciences’ at the University of Perugia. The generalist course of study provided me with fundamental knowledge and skills in all biological fields. Conducting a three-year thesis on the phytoplankton formation of Lake Trasimento allowed me to delve into aspects of microbial ecology. I subsequently obtained a master's degree in ‘Conservation and Evolution’ at the University of Pisa. This degree course combined typically biological fields, such as cellular and molecular biology, with typically naturalistic fields, such as environmental management, nature conservation and the natural history of the earth. In addition to this, ample space was given to evolutionary biology, and the study of the relationship between ecology and evolution. During my dissertation, I worked on the population genetics of the crayfish. This allowed me to carry out both field and laboratory work. I am currently completing a PhD in ‘Biology’, with a specialisation in ‘Animal Ecology’, at Uppsala University. I am studying freshwater ecosystems, with a focus on ecological balances and the possibilities of co-existence of different species, based on abiotic and biotic factors. In addition to this, I am conducting genomic studies to analyse the incidence of hybridisation between fish species. I have been able to greatly develop my skills in the laboratory, as well as my statistical and bioinformatics skills.
